My lemon water experiment

My lemon water Experiment blog post. The benefits of drinking lemon water tried and tested. Read more at

Lately, I can’t seem to stop hearing about lemon water.

A few weeks ago, when my health coaching group unanimously agreed that drinking warm lemon water in the mornings was a very good thing to do, I figured it was time to give it a try.

The trouble is I’ve tried this experiment several times before and always failed miserably. There were several reasons. Firstly, I kept forgetting to buy fresh lemons, and then I couldn’t figure out how to make it work with my morning coffee, which is definitely my morning beverage of choice. It was either one or the other, and lemon water just didn’t seem as satisfying.

Most recently, I tried again while we we’re living in Tunisia. I kept up the routine most days, until summer rolled around. Drinking anything warm in the stifling hot mornings left me sweating profusely for hours afterwards.

As far as I understood, lemon water is a good way to detox in the mornings, but it turns out there are multitudes of other health benefits as well. It can help aid digestion, while a hit of Vitamin C from the lemon can also give the immune system a bit of a boost. Read more about the benefits (and myths about drinking lemon water) here.

With all this lemon water promotion going on, I had to try again once and for all.

After 2 weeks of drinking warm lemon water, here’s what I found…

  1. I was less hungry

On most days, I’m a hungry monster when I wake up in the mornings. I struggle to last longer than an hour or so without having to devour something. I found that drinking the lemon water somehow helped curb my appetite. It wasn’t as satisfying as a proper meal, but I felt a bit more relaxed about breakfast time.

  1. I didn’t get sick

Last week my husband, who rarely gets sick, suffered through one of the worst colds he’s ever experienced. Normally in this kind of situation, I would catch it from him immediately and proceed to have an even worse reaction. This time, I felt a bit of a sore throat but nothing more. I can’t definitively say it was the lemon water that offered me protection, but I’m sure it helped at least a little bit. Either way, It was a small miracle I didn’t get sick.

  1. I had better digestion…some of the time

Lemon water, specifically the warm water component, is said to naturally flush the system and help get things moving. I don’t often have problems with that, so I didn’t notice a great deal of change but it didn’t make things worse. I also didn’t notice a huge difference in bloating or digestion during the day, but others swear by it.

  1. I felt calmer

The best way for me to fit lemon water into my usual morning routine, was to drink it immediately upon waking and just before my morning meditation. It may have been thanks to the lemon water, but I did seem to feel calmer and more focused than usual. This was definitely one of the more obvious effects.

Unfortunately, after 2 weeks of drinking lemon water religiously, I didn’t notice any change in my energy levels. I also didn’t see any difference in my skin appearance, but maybe that’s a longer term benefit.

How I drank my lemon water…

  1. Half to 1 cup of hot water, not boiling
  2. 1/2 the juice of a lemon, seeds removed. I used a whole lemon if it was a small one.
  3. Thin slice of fresh ginger, if I had it handy

Sip slowly, and enjoy while it’s still warm!

  1. Great blog Martina!
I did the lemon water thing when I moved to NY in 2014, also after reading tons of articles about the health benefits. I didn’t feel less hungry though, a shame 😉 but I didn’t get sick that year!
I really should restart this habit, I’m just lazy and really really crave my cup of coffee in the morning!

    1. Hi Sabah! Thanks for your comment! It really is the coffee habit that ruins everything! I didn’t mention it in the post but at one point I tried delaying my morning coffee until later in the day. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me, I craved it too much, but it’s worth a try!
