Monthly Roundup: January 2018

Read all the best of what I've been up to for January 2018 including getaway of the month, book recommendations, movies, recipes and more.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.”

– Confucius

This week I hit my second trimester of pregnancy. Along with the expected slowing down of things, add to the mix a couple of overnight international flights, cross-country bus journeys and a bunch of family catchups, and never before has this quote rung more true for me than today!

Having said that, it’s long been a solid favourite and a good reminder that you don’t have to speed through life to get to where you want to be. Maybe you’re feeling a similar lull in energy as you recover from holiday festivities this month? Whatever it may be…it’s all good, just keep at it.

What I’m reading

In his latest book, Richard Branson offers up a very personal and heartfelt insight into the life of a billionaire entrepreneur…and quite fittingly, another reminder to just keep at it! This was my first foray into the writings of Richard Branson and I have to admit he tells a good story.

Throughout the book, Branson candidly takes us behind the scenes of his success with the Virgin brand, but also the many failures and roadblocks he’s experienced throughout his long career. There is advice for budding entrepreneurs, and for the rest of us, a number of extremely cringe-worthy, laugh out loud moments that leave you feeling glad it was him and not you.

I loved reading this book. For us ‘regular’ people, it can be difficult to understand and even imagine what the life of a billionaire might be like, but Branson does a good job of reassuring us that he’s just as human, with the same concerns and emotions as everyone else.

What i’m listening to

There isn’t a month that goes by that Tim Ferriss doesn’t make it onto my Podcast playlist, but this month especially I’ve been loving his multi-guest Q&A mix ups featuring some of the most successful and interesting people this planet has to offer.

If you’re keen to give it a whirl, but find the sheer number of episodes overwhelming (Ferriss is very consistent with his offerings, bless him), I highly recommend Episode 292 ‘Lessons and Warnings from Successful Risk Takers’ and Episode 290 ‘Experiments in Happiness and Creativity’ featuring, Gretchen Ruben, one of my favourite people in the world. If these don’t leave you feeling inspired and ready to take on the world, I don’t know what will!

Getaway of the month

Close your eyes and transport yourself, for just a second, to Croatia. What do you see? Perhaps you envision sailing along the deep blue sea? Sunbathing in the summer sun? Visiting picturesque islands or strolling through atmospheric streets, lined with cobblestones and trendy cafes?

This month I spent a week in Croatia, during the middle of winter. It’s certainly not as lively as it is during the summer but the winter brings with it it’s own charms. For one thing, the streets are less crowded and it’s easier to get a table at a restaurant! But despite the lack of swimming and sunbathing, I still enjoyed crisp, sunny winter days and long walks in the park.

Considering a Winter Getaway? Croatia is probably not the first place that comes to mind, but is well worth a visit. People watching in one of a multitude of cafes in town is just one of the more relaxed, winter sports practices in Zagreb. Read more January treats in my Monthly roundup @ Stayathomestraggler.com
People watching in Zagreb, in one of a multitude of street cafes is a favourite winter sport of Croatians.
Considering a Winter Getaway? Croatia is probably not the first place that comes to mind, but is well worth a visit. Taking a stroll through Maximir Park, the largest in the city, is one of the more relaxed winter sports practiced in Zagreb.
Special moments from Maximir Park, Zagreb. I spent many an afternoon wandering around this ginormous forest and gardens. (Photo credits: my awesome cousin, Ivana)
Considering a Winter Getaway? Croatia is probably not the first place that comes to mind, but is well worth a visit. Taking a stroll along the waterfront is a regular Croatian pastime, whether winter or summer! Here you can see the snowcapped Velebit mountains in the distance
Taking a walk along the Riva in Zadar. Check out that blue sky! If it wasn’t for the snow capped mountains in the distance, you could be excused for thinking it was the middle of summer!

Recipe of the month

Cheesy Cauliflower Bake

This Cheesy cauliflower bake is full of cheesy goodness, and is an absolute breeze to prepare. Best of all it's completely gluten free! Check out the complete recipe @ stayathomestraggler.com

Part of my visit to Croatia this month was to stock up on fancy food, including gluten free products that are otherwise not easy to find (and hideously expensive) in Georgia.

After 3 months of oven-free living, I was super excited this week to finally move into a place with an (almost) proper equipped kitchen. Armed with my freshly purchased goods and a leftover head of cauliflower I had lying in the fridge, I decided to christen the oven with one of my favourite all-time recipes.

You can’t go wrong with a combo like cauliflower and cheese, but if you’re wanting to reinvent the same old dish, look no further! My cheesy cauliflower bake is not only full of cheesy goodness it’s also completely gluten free and a breeze to prepare. Perfect as a side dish, or a snack on it’s own. Check out the full recipe here.

What i’m watching

2018 looks set to be a great year for movies! My favourite so far is Molly’s Game. Based on the true story of Molly Bloom and how she came to run the world’s most exclusive high stakes poker game. It’s a faced paced flick with never a dull moment.

Blog of the moment

I’ve been a follower of The Whole Daily for a few years now, although admittedly, i often just skip straight to the recipes page. Alice Nicholls has a massive selection of amazingly delicious looking desserts, and now with my somewhat ‘proper’ kitchen, I’m excited to actually try some of them out…or at least just drool over all the pictures!

She’s also recently become and Ambassador for doTerra Essential oils, which I am gearing up to test out this month…stay tuned!

On that note, the month of February will be all about good health including meditation, nutrition and an insight into Health coaching as well as my own personal health journey. Look out for the next few week’s posts!
